The AquaTru Classic is a four-stage countertop reverse osmosis system. You fill the rear tank, press the button, and collect filtered water in a removable front pitcher.
It isn’t fast, and it takes up about as much room as a small countertop appliance. But it delivers the contaminant reduction we wanted without a plumber, drilled hole, or dedicated faucet.

We used Tap Score partner labs to test water from our AquaTru Classic for PFAS and microplastics. The PFAS panel included city-tap and treated-water samples. The microplastics panel tested treated water only, so it shows what remained after filtration rather than a measured reduction percentage.

🏠 What Three-Plus Years of Use Taught Us
The best part of the AquaTru Classic is its routine. Fill the rear tank, start a cycle, and come back to a removable pitcher of RO water. Filter changes take minutes, and the indicator removes the calendar guesswork.
The clean pitcher also lifts out for the refrigerator. It needs shelf space rather than a door pocket, and AquaTru includes only one pitcher.
Our unit made a soft pump hum while filtering, but it never dominated the room. The plastic and controls held up well through more than three years of regular use.
What Gets Annoying
- Small batches: The clean tank holds 0.75 gallon. Cooking or serving a group can mean running another cycle.
- Slow dispensing: Filling a large jug directly from the spout takes patience.
- Reject water: Each cycle leaves concentrated water in the rear tank. It has to be emptied before the next fill.
- Counter space: At roughly 12 × 14 × 14 inches, this isn’t a small pitcher filter.
💡 Our routine: We ran a batch before we needed it and kept the clean spare pitcher we had cold in the fridge. That worked better than waiting beside the machine for water.
💧 How the Four Filters Work
- Mechanical pre-filter: Catches sediment before it reaches the carbon and RO stages.
- Activated carbon: Targets chlorine and protects the RO membrane.
- Reverse osmosis membrane: Separates many dissolved contaminants from the product water.
- Final carbon filter: Polishes the water before it reaches the clean tank. AquaTru also sells a mineral-boost version.
AquaTru says the Classic is certified by IAPMO to NSF/ANSI standards for 84 contaminants. That certification is separate from our PFAS and microplastics testing.

We rinsed the tanks with soap and water about once a week. After changing a filter, run the flush cycles in AquaTru’s instructions before drinking the water.

Buy it for drinking and cooking water in a one- to three-person home. For heavier demand, an under-sink system is the better fit.
